Welcome to the second edition of The PolyU InnoHub Newsletter! This quarterly newsletter will bring you with the latest news, activities and events organized by PolyU InnoHub and Institute for Entrepreneurship.

PolyU Startups Scoop Top Prizes Again

PolyU winning teams of the Create@Alibaba Cloud Startup Contest Hong Kong 2017.

Jointly organized by the PolyU InnoHub and Create@Alibaba Cloud, the Final of the Create@Alibaba Cloud Startup Contest Hong Kong was held at PolyU on 21 July. Four PolyU supported took part in the Finals alongside other four finalists.

 

The PolyU teams did exceptionally well in the final pitching, with Alike Audience, Pokeguide and Vox Technology winning the top three prizes. Alike Audience will be representing Hong Kong at the ultimate final and competing against other regional winners in Shanghai in October. Watch the highlights of the event here

Startup Business Consultation Clinic @ PolyU InnoHub

Starting from September 2017, PolyU's Institute for Entrepreneurship (IfE) collaborates with #43 Ventures, a company formed by a group of impact investors, social entrepreneurs and startup coaches (#43 Venture Fellows), to provide consultancy service to our startups and student teams at InnoHub. The #43 Venture Fellows will become our 'Entrepreneurs-in-Residence' (EIRs) at the InnoHub to provide services on a weekly basis.

Any PolyU members (including students, graduates and academic staff) who would like to seek advice from the EIRs on their startup ideas/ businesses are welcome to reserve their time here

HKTDC Entrepreneur Day

HKTDC Entrepreneur Day 2017.

IfE participated in the annual HKTDC Entrepreneur Day on 19 and 20 May at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.  Ten PolyU startup teams joined to exhibit their products and services to the public.  Some of them also attracted potential business opportunities from the conference visitors.

Shanghai-Hong Kong Youth Entrepreneurship Boot Camp

Organized together by Fudan University, Tongji University and PolyU, the Shanghai-Hong Kong Youth Entrepreneurship Boot Camp was held on 19-24 May in Shanghai.

More than 40 young students from Shanghai and Hong Kong participated in the 6-day training with classroom learning, pitching exercises and one-on-one mentoring session covering various topics like Business Models, Design Thinking and Presentation Skills. Visits to universities and incubators in Shanghai were also arranged to enhance the participants’ understanding of the entrepreneurial environment in Shanghai.

Three winning teams of the pitching competition in the Boot Camp were awarded fast pass to the Final Assessment of the STEFG-PolyU China Entrepreneurship Fund 2017, in which one team went on to secure the Fund to kick off their business in Shanghai.

Stars Connected

PolyU Stars Connected.

To reinforce PolyU’s advocacy and achievement in KT, a high profile event 'Stars Connected' was held at the Intercontinental Hotel on 5 June, to highlight the Distinguished Knowledge Transfer Awards in the past five years, accompanied with a gala dinner and a mini exhibition featuring international award-winning projects.

With the Hon. Nicholas Yang, the Secretary for Innovation and Technology, as the Guest of Honour, the event gathered over 300 guests from government, researchers, industrialists, intermediaries and start-up community members to appreciate PolyU’s university-industry partnership and KT achievements.

MIT China Innovation and Entrepreneurship Cofounders’ Journey Forum

IfE collaborated with MIT Innovation Node Hong Kong and MIT China Innovation and Entrepreneurship Forum (MIT CHIEF) to organize the “Cofounders’ Journey Forum” on 5 July at V322, PolyU.

The Forum featured panel discussions with mind-intriguing idea exchange and sharing ranging from how to fuel up Hong Kong’s startup ecosystem and master fundraising in Hong Kong and China, to understand academia’s role in fostering innovation and entrepreneurship. In addition, eight startup teams from MIT also presented their leading-edge technologies and met with many local potential investors.

RISE Conference Community Event – Education Technology

David Blake of Degreed, Antony Chen of iTutor, Dennis Yang of Udemy and Vince Chan of Unlearn sharing their insights on future trends of EdTech.

Innovations in education have long been a mind intriguing topic. In July 2017 IfE joined forces with RISE Conference and UnLearn and co-organized a RISE community event at TU201, PolyU on the topic of ‘The Future of Higher Education’.

Prof. Eric Tsui, Professor of Industrial and System Engineering, shared on the topic of 'Learning in the age of digitalization', whereby PolyU has launched 'Massive Open Online Courses' (MOOCs) as part of the University’s learning program. In addition, renowned leaders in the field, Dennis Yang of Udemy, David Blake of Degreed, Antony Chen of iTutor and Vince Chan of UnLearn also inspired the audience by sharing their insights on the future trends of EdTech.

SLUSH Singapore

To further establish PolyU as a key player in the Asian startup arena, IfE led a group of three PolyU supported startups to attend the Singapore Week of Innovation & Technology (SWITCH), in which the three startups - Holumino, Easiread and Vox Technology exhibited at SLUSH Singapore during 18-21 September. Holumino also went onto the Live Demo Stage at SLUSH and demonstrated their new product which could turn an iPhone into a 360 degrees camera.

The delegation also visited local organizations and networked with both local and regional Startups.
